The USGA Women's Amateur Championship - 1929

Glenna Collett becomes the 1st women to win four USGA Women's Amateur championships. This year's event was played at Oakland Hills Country Club, in Detroit, Michigan. Collett defeated Leona (Mrs. Harry) Pressler, 4 and 3. Helen Hicks and Virginia Van Wie tied for the medal at 79.
As the decade came to an end women's scores began to lower significantly as all 32 qualifiers had to shoot an 88 or below to qualify. It was only 1914 when all the ladies had to shoot 100
or under to qualify!
A new record in length of match was established between Collett and Mrs. Harley G. Higby, when Collett downed Higby at the 19th hole after having been 4 down with 4 to go, in the qualifying round. There were 98 entries.
At the Close of the 1920's the USGA had 477 member clubs.
